Transponder Keys

What is a Transponder Key & How Does It Work?

Transponder key technology is constantly changing to offer better security and ease of use. Since the late 90’s many vehicle manufacturers began to use a immobilization system to prevent vehicle theft.

It is a standard feature in almost all vehicles today.  Transponder keys consist of a small chip inside the key that stops the vehicle from starting if a correct key is not recognized. They send a signal to the cars ECU or computer. If this signal is correct, the vehicle may start.

Now key-less entry and push button start is normal for most cars. Automotive security has come a long way in the last 15 years. Many locksmiths just haven’t kept up with the technology.

Traditional transponder keys consist of 3 main components.

  • Key Blade
  • Transponder Chip
  • Remote

The key blade must be cut to the correct biting to turn the ignition, door locks and boot.

The transponder chip must be programmed to the cars computer to allow the engine to start. With many older cars the remote for locking and unlocking the vehicle is often optional. But, many modern cars with proximity systems require a remote and chip to be programmed at the same time. Often in this case a genuine original key is required.

With many modern proximity keys, you wont see the blade at all. It can normally be removed by pressing a button and by pulling at the same time. The blade is still there for emergency situations e.g the proximity key has been damaged and is no longer operating.
